The awarding ceremony of victors in the Principal's Trophy has happened today, 15 November at UNILIA’s kaning’ina campus hall.
The event which was graced by the presence of the Principal himself, the Registrar and Dean of Students saw various students and classes who took part in the competition being awarded on various positions.
Besides awarding overall winner’s of the competition, individual winners were also awarded, some of the categories and winners in the competition include the following
Michael Jawido Majawa as best volleyball player of the tournament, whilst best Football player of the went to Simeon Chunga, Glory Jere was awarded best netball player, Wongani (O.G) has been awarded with best goal of the tournament award.
Watipaso (Nobble) Mhone emerged as the best male supporter whilst Mary Mwale as 13th female player.
Speaking to Pamtondoonline in an interview, Reverend Wisdom Mwale, Registrar at Kaning’ina said the competition’s are important since they help the students to relax as well as get together as a community.
“The events are very important in bringing harmony among students as well as members of stuff,
Also physically it has helped our students to gain some muscle since they were not just glued to books but also doing physical exercises,” said Mwale.
The registrar showed satisfaction over the whole competition saying the events happened according to their plans and it will give advantage to Kaning’ina teams in the vice chancellors trophy.
“Such games will also give advantage to our athletes when they will be competing in the vice chancellors trophy competitions next semester,
As you know we have a new campus in Lilongwe which will make this year’s competitions real tough because four campus will be competing for the price money,” Mwale further added.
Reverend JPV Mwale, Principal at Kaning'ina campus during his speech at the event said that It is not healthy for students to concentrate on books all the time, that’s why the school organised the competition to help them relax abit.
Collins Makwakwa, Sports Director for Kaning’ina's students Union, and also a Third Year Representative said as champions they are very proud of the prize they have received.
“This shows development in our school, we have been crying for along time that our school does not give us such activities but this has proven that the future is bright for our school,” said Makwakwa.
Concerning complaints that some of the games in the competition were rigged, Makwakwa said errors in the designing of the games might have been there since this was the first time.
He further pledged for the continuation of unity among the third year students reminding them that it was not a one man’s job that made them winners but all of them as a class.
However, Tawonga Sibande, Captain for the Kaning’ina basketball team showed concerns that their sport was not recognised in the awarding ceremony.
“As basketball players we feel betrayed, we delivered our problems to the administration that we are failing to compete in the competition since we don’t have a basketball court on campus but we have been side-lined from this whole thing,” said Sibande.
The Principals Trophy competition is expected to be happening each academic year and the administration gave 440 thousand Kwacha in this year’s competitions.
