The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has exciting developments for the upcoming CECAFA Kagame Cup 2024. Originally scheduled to take place from July 20th to August 4th, the tournament has been rescheduled and will now run from July 6th to 22nd in Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Three guest teams have confirmed their participation, adding a new dimension to the competition. TP Mazembe from DR Congo, Nyasa Big Bullets from Malawi, and Zambia’s Red Arrows FC will join 13 other teams from the CECAFA Zone. The decision to include these guest teams aims to elevate the level of play and provide a real test for the participating clubs.
CECAFA Executive Director John Auka Gecheo expressed, “This competition will help our teams in the Zone prepare better during the pre-season ahead of the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, both of which start in August.”
In addition to the Kagame Cup, CECAFA had initially planned the Senior Challenge Cup 2024 to open the calendar from June 29th to July 14th. However, this event has been canceled to allow players more time to prepare with their teams for the Kagame Cup.
The confirmed teams for the CECAFA Kagame Cup include Vital 'O (Burundi), APR FC (Rwanda), El Merreikh, Al Hilal, Hai El Wadi (Sudan), Young Africans SC, Simba SC, Azam FC, Coastal Union FC (Tanzania), Gor Mahia FC (Kenya), SC Villa (Uganda), JKU SC (Zanzibar), El Merreikh FC-Bentiu (South Sudan), Nyasa Big Bullets FC (Malawi), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), and Red Arrows FC (Zambia).
