At just 21 years old, Taonga Jeka is making strides in the world of poetry and journalism. A student at the University of Livingstonia, Kaning'ina Campus, Jeka is known to her peers as a talented writer and poet. But what many don't know is that she's also a gifted spoken word artist with a passion for music and performance.
Jeka's love affair with poetry began in standard 4 at Natasha Trust Private School. "I remember reciting poetry at school assemblies when I was just 7 years old," she recalls. "That's when I realized my passion for poetry." From then on, Jeka developed her craft, eventually turning to spoken word poetry as a way to express herself creatively.
Jeka's poetry is unlike any other. She combines spoken word with music, creating a unique sound that's both powerful and captivating. "My poetry focuses on classical things and experiences faced by society or individuals," she explains. "I want to make Malawi and the world love poetry just like music." Her poems tackle themes like heartbreak, culture, environmental issues, and love.
Jeka's poetry has already gained traction, with her first poem, "Dear Lover," receiving excellent reviews. Her latest release, "Culture," addresses the degradation of African culture and the lack of respect for the elderly. With three poems under her belt, Jeka is set to take her talent to the international stage. "My words to my fans: it's all about time. Let's continue growing together, and thanks for your support always."
Jeka's talents don't stop at poetry. She's also a singer, short story writer, and social media personality. As a spokesperson and social media manager for Primo Visualz company and Tremone Truns PR, Jeka is a true Renaissance woman.
Jeka's next project is a poem tackling environmental issues.
