The Government of Malawi has announced that the remains of the late Honourable Lucius Banda will be repatriated from Johannesburg, South Africa to Malawi on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
The Ministry of Information and Digitalisation released a statement confirming the details of the repatriation process.
According to the statement issued by Moses Kunkuyu, the Minister of Information and Digitalisation and Chief Government Spokesperson, the plane carrying the remains of Honourable Lucius Banda is scheduled to land at Chileka Airport in Blantyre at approximately 2:00 PM.
Upon arrival, the body will be transported to the College of Medicine for an inspection.
Following the inspection, a Requiem Mass will be held at St. Louis Montfort Parish in Balaka at 6:00 PM in honour of the late Honourable Lucius Banda. After the Mass, the body will be taken to his residence where a vigil will be held.
The government has assured the public that further details regarding the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course. The Ministry expressed its condolences and hopes that the soul of Honourable Lucius Banda will rest in eternal peace.
Lucius Banda, an important figure in Malawian music and politics, passed away on 30 June in south Africa while he was receiving his treatment.
The public is encouraged to join in paying their respects and honouring the legacy of Lucius Banda during the Requiem Mass and vigil. The government also extends its gratitude to those who have shown support and solidarity during this period of mourning.
