Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has reinforced its collaboration with the National Registration Bureau (NRB) by providing 800 generators to support the NRB's nationwide mass civil registration exercise.
The exercise aims to register all citizens and resident foreigners who have been living in Malawi for seven years or more, issuing national ID cards and Resident Foreigner ID cards respectively.
The generators will power equipment in registration centres without access to electricity, ensuring a seamless and widespread registration process. To be eligible for voter registration, registrants must present proof of national registration issued by the NRB.
The NRB's mop-up exercise will take place from June to August 2024, followed by a fresh voter registration exercise conducted by the MEC starting in September 2024.
Andrew Mpesi, Chief Elections Officer at MEC confirmed the development stating that the collaboration aims to enhance the registration process, ensuring that all eligible citizens and residents can participate in the democratic process."
