On March 28, 2024, the Malawi Parliament legalized the cultivation and sale of locally grown cannabis for commercial purposes. This landmark decision followed extensive discussions and negotiations among lawmakers about the benefits of such legislation for the country.
Despite strong opposition from some quarters, citing religious and moral objections from groups such as the SDA, Catholic, and Islamic communities, the bill moved forward. Shadric Namalomba, Member of Parliament for Mangochi South West, voiced concerns, labeling marijuana use as sinful and urging a thorough review of the law in accordance with Islamic teachings.
Titus Mvalo, the Minister of Justice, recommended that the bill be subjected to further scrutiny by the parliamentary committee on law. On the other hand, Peter Dimba, Member of Parliament for Lilongwe South, who initially proposed the bill, stated that the committee had already examined the bill and had resolved to legalize it.
