Fees Adjustment Sparks Outrage Among UNILIA Students

Updated: Jan 30

By Sarah Magugu

In the midst of the upcoming academic year, students at University of Livingstonia (UNILIA) have been left in shock and frustration as the university announced sudden and unexpected adjustments to their fees yesterday.

The adjustments have come in the middle of the academic year, leaving both new and continuing students scrambling to come up with the additional funds required to continue their education.

The university has not provided any explanation for the sudden fee adjustments, leaving students and their families feeling blindsided and unsettled.

Many students had already made financial plans for the year based on the initial fee structure and are now facing uncertainty and increased financial strain.

"I don't know how I'm going to afford this, I had everything planned out and now I have to come up with more money on short notice. It's really unfair." said Jane Phiri, a new student at the University.

The lack of transparency and communication from the university has only added to the frustration and anxiety among the student body.

Many students are questioning the timing of the fee adjustments, with some expressing concerns about the university's financial management and decision-making processes.

"We understand that universities may face financial challenges, but this is simply unacceptable,

"It feels like we are being taken advantage of, and it's not right." said Stanley Nkhoma, a continuing student at the University.

As the start of the academic year approaches, students are left uncertain about their future at the university and are calling for transparency and fairness in the fee adjustment process.

Many are pleading with the university to reconsider the adjustments and provide adequate support and resources for students who are now facing unexpected financial burdens.

As it stands, students staying on campus are expected to be paying K794,000 from K731,000 and K694,000 from K631,000 for those staying off campus, representing a 10% increase on the fees.

The university administration has yet to respond to the growing backlash and demands for an explanation. The situation remains tense as students and their families anxiously await further developments.
