Farmers urged to embrace new farming technology

By John Kamanga

In a bid to achieve household food security and boost crop production in Mzimba North, Agriculture Authorities have called upon local farmers to embrace modern farming technologies, including rice production.

During the Mzimba North field day tour at Mkamaumoza catchment under Engucwin Extension Planning Area (EPA), Anderson Chikomola, the deputy programs manager of Mzuzu Agriculture Development Division, highlighted the importance of crop diversification to improve nutrition and overall crop yield among farmers.

Despite the availability of necessary expertise, Chikomola expressed concern that some farmers are still not utilizing modern techniques in their farming practices.

He further emphasized on the need for farmers to adopt advanced farming methods to increase productivity.

Mapulani Nkosi, a rice farmer who has successfully ventured into rice cultivation in Mzimba, urged his fellow farmers to consider diversifying their crops and exploring new opportunities such as rice farming.

He further emphasized on the potential benefits of growing rice, a crop that is not commonly grown in the region.

The field day tour showcased various agricultural activities, including rice cultivation, maize and groundnut farming, and pig rearing. Farmers were given demonstrations on modern farming techniques to help them improve their agricultural practices and increase their crop yields.

Local farmers were encouraged to take advantage of the resources and support provided by the Agriculture Authorities to enhance their farming operations and achieve food security at the household level.
