Celebrating Language Diversity: The Dual Challenges of English Dominance and Mother Tongue Neglect"

Growing up and progressing through my primary and secondary education, I always knew that I excelled in the English subject, a foreign language that had come to dominate over our country's vernacular language, Chichewa. However, despite my proficiency in English, the need for me to have a strong command of my mother tongue always lingered. I saw no reason to neglect a language that would enable me to communicate with my grandmother.

Interestingly, many people view it quite differently. When they hear someone struggling with word-verb agreement in their verbal or written expressions, they perceive it as a lack of knowledge. Even our country's higher education system has been marred by corruption, ruining the prospects of numerous young men and women who didn't perform well in the English subject.

I often contemplate that it's crucial to emphasize that the English language primarily serves as a means of communication, not as a sole measure of one's knowledge or intellect. It's disheartening that we comfortably bestow English names upon our children without understanding their meanings. It's a shame!

This is particularly unsettling given that our country claims to be independent, yet we struggle to take pride in speaking our own native mother language. Nonetheless, all hope is not lost, as some parts of the country, like the Tumbuka people, still hold an enthusiasm for communicating in their own languages.

Ine anthu mukamaseka m'malawi nzanu cuz sakuyankhula chizungu chabwino ndimangokuwonani ngat ndinu mbuli, why should you laugh at someone who's failing to speak a foreign language pomwe inu simungalembe kalata ya nzeru mu chiyankhulo cha Kwanu?? Isn't it concerning?
